Tailwind Plus Alternatives in 2026: What to Use Now That You Can't Buy Tailwind UI

Published: October 26, 2026 · 9 min read

Tailwind Plus (formerly Tailwind UI) closed to new customers in September 2026. Compare shadcn/ui, Flowbite, daisyUI and DesignLayer by price, license and motion.

TL;DR

TL;DR: On September 9, 2026, Tailwind Labs joined Shopify and closed Tailwind Plus (formerly Tailwind UI) to new customers. People who already bought it keep access. Tailwind CSS itself stays free and MIT-licensed. For new work, the practical replacements are shadcn/ui, Flowbite, daisyUI, and DesignLayer. shadcn/ui and daisyUI are free MIT libraries. Flowbite's core is free and MIT; Flowbite Pro Developer edition is $299 one-time, excl. taxes. DesignLayer is the one built as finished motion sections you preview and hand to Cursor or Claude Code. Free is 5 component copies a month, 1 video prompt a month, and 10 Free Sample components. The 30-Day Build Pass is $19 one-time, with no auto-renewal. Lifetime Access is $79 one-time for the first 100 buyers, or $60 to upgrade from an active Pass within 30 days. Plus is $9/month.

Flowbite Pro and DesignLayer prices were checked on October 26, 2026. Confirm them on each vendor's page before you buy.

What happened to Tailwind Plus on September 9, 2026?

Adam Wathan announced that Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify. The post draws a clean line between the open-source framework and the paid product:

  • Tailwind CSS does not change. It stays MIT-licensed, and the same team keeps maintaining it, with Shopify's support.

  • The commercial products stop taking new customers. Existing customers keep access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh. Sign-ups for new customers are closed so the team can focus on Tailwind CSS.

Tailwind Plus is the product previously sold as Tailwind UI: the paid set of application and marketing components, sections, and templates built with Tailwind. If you never bought it, there is no public checkout to buy it now. If you already own it, this article is not telling you to throw it away. It is for the next project, when the store is closed.

What are you actually replacing?

Tailwind Plus was never the CSS framework. It was a catalog of designed markup you could paste into a Tailwind project. People reach for a replacement when they want one of these:

  • Application UI. Navbars, command palettes, settings screens, and forms that already look finished.

  • Marketing sections. Heroes, feature grids, pricing, and FAQs, with spacing decided.

  • A license they can put on a client site without rebuilding the blocks from screenshots.

  • Motion. Tailwind Plus blocks are mostly styled markup plus light interaction. A lot of teams only notice that after the page feels static.

shadcn/ui, Flowbite, daisyUI, and DesignLayer each cover a different slice of that list. Price, license, and motion are the three checks that separate them.

Flowbite

Flowbite Pro Developer edition: $299 one-time, excl. taxes. A team license is listed separately on the Pro page.

daisyUI

The library stays free. The store sells templates separately; that is not a subscription for the components.

DesignLayer

Preview everything. 5 component copies/month, 1 video prompt/month, and 10 Free Sample components.

30-Day Build Pass: $19 one-time, no auto-renewal. Lifetime Access: $79 one-time for the first 100 buyers, or $60 to upgrade from an active Pass within 30 days. Plus: $9/month.

A short landing page is the case where the models diverge. Flowbite Pro is a one-time $299 license. DesignLayer's 30-Day Build Pass is $19 once, and it does not renew. Plus at $9/month is the option when you want copies all month and you will cancel after the launch. Lifetime Access is the pay-once option, capped at the first 100 buyers.

Prices move. Read Flowbite Pro and DesignLayer pricing again before you pay.

DesignLayer

The section already moves: scroll, springs, digit rolls, accordions

Per component: Motion, GSAP, Anime.js, Three.js, Lottie, or CSS. The dependency list is on the component page.

If the missing piece is a button that matches your theme, shadcn/ui or daisyUI is enough. If the missing piece is a pricing section whose prices roll, or a header that becomes a pill as you scroll, you are comparing motion sections, not class names.

Where does DesignLayer fit?

DesignLayer is a catalog of motion-first React sections. You watch the section in the browser, then Copy for Cursor copies the instructions, the preview URL, the TSX, and the npm dependencies. It sits next to shadcn/ui. It does not replace your button primitive.

Headers, feature grids, and pricing

These three are the usual Tailwind UI-shaped holes on a marketing page:

  • Brand Bar Header is a dark full-width header. On scroll it morphs into a floating center pill. Nav collapses on small screens.

  • Product Feature Bento is an asymmetric dark bento for product specs, with portrait, landscape, and wide tiles.

  • Kinetic Service Pricing puts a giant wordmark behind three frosted-glass plan cards. Prices roll digit by digit, and the Billed Yearly switch rolls them to yearly rates.

Brand Bar Header, Product Feature Bento, and Kinetic Service Pricing are three of the 10 Free Sample components.

FAQ, command palette, and a scrolling feature list

  • Numbered FAQ Panel is a numbered FAQ. The open row turns white, and the plus rotates into a × as the answer expands. It is also a Free Sample.

  • Spring Command Palette is a ⌘K palette. Pages, actions, and recent items filter as you type, with spring motion and keyboard support.

  • Scroll Feature Showcase stacks large headings beside a component screen. Scrolling, or clicking a heading, reveals the next panel from the bottom edge up.

Which DesignLayer plan matches one launch

Browse the catalog with no account. Free covers 5 component copies a month and 1 video prompt a month. Source comes from Copy for Cursor.

The 30-Day Build Pass is $19 once. It does not auto-renew. For 30 days you can copy every component and video prompt without the monthly cap. If you want to keep that after the month, an active Pass upgrades to Lifetime Access for $60 within 30 days. Lifetime Access on its own is $79 one-time for the first 100 buyers. Plus is $9/month when you would rather subscribe and cancel.

Paid plans can also connect DesignLayer over MCP, so Cursor or Claude Code can search the catalog from the editor.

Which alternative should you pick?

  • Keep Tailwind CSS. The framework is not what closed. Your existing className workflow stays.

  • Pick shadcn/ui when you want React primitives in your repo, and you will design the marketing sections yourself or add motion beside them.

  • Pick Flowbite when you want a broad Tailwind component set, including dashboards, and a one-time Pro license at $299 excl. taxes is acceptable.

  • Pick daisyUI when you want themeable components as class names, with almost no JavaScript, and you do not need choreographed scroll sections.

  • Pick DesignLayer when you want the section to already move, you build with Cursor or Claude Code, and you would rather pay $19 for 30 days, $79 once while the first 100 Lifetime spots last, or $9/month than buy a closed catalog.

Teams mix them. shadcn/ui for the dialog and the form, daisyUI or Flowbite for everyday controls, and a motion section from DesignLayer where the page has to feel finished.

FAQ

  • No. On September 9, 2026, Tailwind Labs closed sign-ups for new customers. Existing customers keep access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh. The announcement is Tailwind Labs is joining Shopify.

Summary

Tailwind Plus is closed to anyone who does not already own it. Tailwind CSS is not. For new interface work, shadcn/ui and daisyUI cover free primitives, Flowbite Pro covers a large paid Tailwind kit at $299 excl. taxes, and DesignLayer covers motion sections with a $19 pass, a $79 lifetime for the first 100 buyers, or Plus at $9/month.
